So it’s one of those truisms isn’t it? When the Student is ready the Teacher will appear ………………… so let me introduce you to someone who taught me a great lesson today:
Yes – it is my Hoover – her name is Harriet, don’t laugh!!! If blokes can name their cars then I can name my hoover.
Today Harriet taught me a wonderful life lesson, because I was quiet and “heard” what she had to teach.
This morning I whipped the hoover out to give the living-room a quick zip around, but despite my frantic back-and-forthing Harriet was refusing to “sook” and the carpet – well frankly the carpet looked worse than when I started.
So Harriet got parked in the corner and I whizzed off on the school run and when I got home she was sitting there still, sulking and give off “I’m not Happy” vibes.
So I pulled out the operation manual for the hoover, a bowl and a chopstick to help de-clog her tubes.
Fifteen minutes later ……………. shut your eyes if you are squeamish, yup – look at the crap she was trying to inhale past.
I’m ashamed that because I didn’t do a little basic maintenance I could have blown her motor and it would have ended up having to spend out on a new hoover.
Bit like me really ……………… how often to I neglect the minutes of maintenance because “I don’t have time”, or “I’ll do it later”, or “I can’t be bothered – incidentally all lies that I tell myself because none of them are actually true.
I grab food on the run , drink too many coffees, skip exercise sessions and don’t take time to de-stress and recover from the busy-ness that is our day-to-day life.
So what to do – well first to be conscious that I am making these choices ….. and that I have the power to make better, more informed and more productive choices.
Oh – and I have written on the calender a reminder on the eleventh of every month to take a few minutes to unclog my hoover – and to remind me to take those few minutes of maintenance for myself as well.
Why the 11th? – because I was born on the 11th and it seems appropriate.
Now forgive me – but now that Harriet and I are operating brilliantly again I am off to tackle the boys bedrooms.
