The kids are back at playgroup and school today – so I have been a busy bunny and have spent most of the day starting the process of writing the new book.
Thought I would keep a record on here of what does and doesn’t work through this whole experiment of bringing a book to market in 30 days.
The first thing that I knew wouldn’t work would be to sit down and type all of the words into the computer. ………………….. Booorrrriiiinng!!!!
It’s definitely not news to those who know me-but as a dyslexic, I much prefer speaking over writing any time…. which is really odd considering that I have won awards from my writing this year. It’s a crazy world after all.
So I grabbed my mind mapping pad and some pens and mind mapped the first chapter in great detail……….probably too much detail.
I’m having much more luck this time round with the nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 voice recognition software. (I’m not sponsored BTW, but I would sure like to be).
I’m sure some of it is down to the great technical help but the biggest difference I find is that I’m using this fantastic set of headphones which were a gift from the lovely Maria email@example.com. I guess she knew what it was I should be doing before I could even admit it to myself.
These great headphones enable me to cut out all the background noise and zero in on my voice which is making things so much quicker and much more accurate
My other challenge? Well I’m still finding it very difficult to sit for any length of time due to my sore back. So I’ve hatched a plan where I am perching on the worktop in the kitchen with my laptop and my headphones.
Actually I’m finding it much easier to speak when I’m up on my feet-maybe it’s all the years of practice being on stage and teaching this stuff but it seems to come easier when up and moving around.
Okay! -It may not look like the desk of our “best selling author” LOL. But you know me, I don’t care what it looks like as long as it gets the job done…….And this is getting the job done! In Spades!!
Of course because I work at home, one of the benefits is that I can stop for a cup of tea any time I need to. Although I have found that the voice recognition software doesn’t like it when I’m boiling the kettle too close. So I’m guessing this is one instance where I won’t be multitasking.
So how did I get on?
Well pretty good for a new setup. Today I managed to “speak” a total of 8200 words of the new book. Considering I am aiming for about 20,000 words for the whole book I think this is not too shabby…… But of course there is still lots of editing to do.
Meet the “Editor in Chief”-name is Puss!
Yes! She is sitting on my mind map. But those of you who have “Cat Masters” know for a fact that cats read through their bums-honestly, cross my fingers, you know it’s true!
However, it does look as though she is giving it the Royal Lick of approval.
So tonight will be all about editing the words I have “written” and creating tomorrow’s mind map in the hope that I can have the same success with this system.
I am so excited about this new software-the mind map, speak and edit process is an ideal one for a wannabe writer and dyslexic like me.
And I know for a fact that several of my students are waiting to hear how I get on-in the hope that they too can adapt adopt this way of working.
Wouldn’t it be really cool if I had a budding novelist amongst my dyslexic students?
Well a girl can dream can’t she?
So come on ladies time to “fess up”-how many of you have secretly hankered about writing the next bestselling novel? Has one of you got the next “Harry Potter” lurking inside? The next “50 Shades”? Maybe even my next all-time hero “Enid Blyton”? LOL
Let me know!!!! – no in fact do – any wanna be Authors out there who want to play along? Who wants to write a book out there?
